Welcome to the Messy Middle

We didn’t plan to start a podcast or a blog.
We planned to build something new. A company, a conversation, maybe a movement. But as we started talking, the stories came first. Not the tidy, LinkedIn-approved stories. The ones underneath…the late-night texts, the “can I admit this out loud?” ones. The ones about ambition and exhaustion, about loving what you do and still feeling like you’ve outgrown it.
We are women who have built entire careers around helping other people find their clarity. Theresa in boardrooms and classrooms, teaching HR leaders how to bring humanity back into systems, helping people see that AI and heart can coexist. Jen in coaching sessions and leadership labs, guiding executives to unlearn their armor, listen differently, and build cultures that actually mean something.
We’ve helped people find their voice, their courage, their next chapter. And then, somewhere in our forties and fifties, we looked at ourselves and realized - oh damn, it’s our turn.
Starting over in midlife isn’t about reinvention the way the internet sells it. It’s not a sunrise yoga pose and a “new chapter” caption. It’s quieter, messier. It’s closing laptops after decades of achievement and asking, “Who am I when I’m not optimizing?” It’s wanting to build something beautiful and useful, but on your own terms this time.
We’ve lived many versions of ourselves.
Theresa: the corporate VP turned professor, AI educator, author, woman who still believes in the power of human connection even as she teaches machines to speak our language.
Jen: the executive coach and facilitator who’s spent her career helping teams communicate, lead, and belong, while quietly learning what it means to belong to herself again.
We’ve sat in boardrooms and break rooms. We’ve led, listened, burned out, and rebuilt. We’ve been the only woman in the room - and the woman everyone came to when they needed to cry, vent, or start over.
And now, we’re building something together — The New Pause Project.
We're in start-up mode, figuring out what this will be as we build it (much like midlife) but this blog is the heartbeat of what we’re making: a space to talk honestly about the in-between.
Midlife isn’t a crisis. It’s a crossroad.
A place where you look around and realize you’ve collected a lifetime of stories, scars, and wisdom, and you’re finally ready to use them. Not to prove anything. Not to hustle harder. But to live wider.
Here, we’ll write about what’s real:
-
The body that changes faster than your wardrobe can keep up.
-
The strange grief of kids growing up — and the strange joy of rediscovering your own edges.
-
The friendships that become lifelines.
-
The courage it takes to stop performing and start creating again.
-
The small rebellions… including wearing what feels good, saying no, and redefining success on a Tuesday afternoon.
This is a love letter to women like us who are tired of being told how to “age gracefully.”
We’d rather age honestly.
So here we are: Two women in midlife - building, laughing, unlearning, still figuring it out.
We don’t have a five-step framework. We have questions, conversations, and a deep belief that the messy middle might just be the most honest, alive place to begin again.
Welcome to The New Pause Project.
Let’s write this next chapter together.
